About this build

The water is in before the walls are finished. In step 3 a few dark gray bricks fill the middle of the well, and in step 4 trans-blue tiles cover them, so the surface sits low and the next two stone courses rise around it. Looking in over the rim, you see water set back inside the stone, not level with it.

The stonework itself is a color trick. The bottom course is all dark gray. The middle one is mostly light gray with dark pieces at the corners, and the top one flips that: light corners, dark sides. Nothing lines up in tidy bands, so the wall reads as rough fieldstone. A ring of dark gray plates in step 6 caps it as a rim.

What makes a well look like a well, rather than a stone planter, is the little roof and the bucket hanging under it. Two reddish-brown 1 x 1 x 5 bricks stand at the sides as posts, and a 1 x 6 plate bridges them. Under that crossbar hang a tan round brick for the rope, a black round plate and a reddish-brown round brick as the bucket, each held by a single stud. The dark-red roof in step 8 is built in three tiers that narrow toward a 2 x 3 plate on top, with brown bricks between the slopes forming the gable.
