About this build
Two red columns, two crossbeams, and a black lintel that lifts at both ends: few shapes in Japanese architecture are as instantly recognized as the torii. It marks the entrance to a Shinto shrine, the point where an ordinary path becomes sacred ground.
Each part of a torii has a name, and this build follows them in order. Step 4 raises the hashira, the pillars, here five red 2 x 2 round bricks on a black base sleeve. Step 5 lays the nuki, the lower tie-beam, as a red 2 x 10 plate clamped between column sections, with a black plaque standing on its center. Step 6 adds the shimaki, a second red beam, and then the kasagi, the black top lintel, built from staggered plates and finished with curved slopes that sweep upward at the tips.
Around the gate sits a small shrine approach. Stepping stones run along a gravel strip through green moss. A pair of stone lanterns, built up over steps 7 to 10, stand on either side, and two komainu, the guardian figures placed in pairs at shrine entrances, wear red bibs in step 11. Two cherry trees with pink blossoms close the scene.
With 110 parts on a 16 x 12 stud base and 13 short steps, this is a gentle first project; most people will finish in roughly 20 to 30 minutes. The longest overhang is the kasagi, and it rests firmly on both columns. Not every torii is painted: many are left as bare wood or stone, and the gate looks just as convincing with the red round bricks swapped for light gray.
