About this build

From a distance, a castle tower is recognized by its top: the parapet bulges outward over the wall below, and its edge is broken into solid merlons with gaps between them. This model gets that profile with ten dark gray inverted slopes in step 11, set in a ring around the 6 x 6 shaft with their slopes facing out. An 8 x 8 plate rests on them, overhanging one stud on every side, and the parapet and merlons are built out to the edge of that plate.

Below the top, the shaft is all texture. Nearly every wall brick is a 1 x 2 or 1 x 4 brick with embossed stonework on its face, mostly light gray with a few dark gray ones scattered through the courses so the wall looks patched and weathered. Courses mix lengths, so the vertical joints never line up from one course to the next.

The openings are simple subtractions. Black 1 x 1 bricks stacked two courses high read as arrow slits; a slightly wider black stack higher up becomes the watch window. The door is two reddish-brown grille bricks, whose horizontal ribs look like bound planks, and a dark gray string course just above it carries a torch on each side.

Eleven wall courses make the shaft the most repetitive part of the build: steps 4 to 10 are mostly the same ring of bricks with the openings moving. Lay out each step's parts by color before starting, and you will spot a misplaced black brick quickly.

With 207 parts in 16 steps, expect around 50-75 minutes. The rock hill, stone steps, broken wall and banner fill a 16 x 16 stud base.
