About this build

Stand at the end of the causeway and you look straight down the gate passage, past a black grille that has stopped halfway. That grille is a portcullis: a heavy lattice of wood or iron that slid down grooves in the gateway to seal it shut. An entrance is the natural weak spot in any castle wall, so medieval builders fortified it heavily, with towers on both sides and defenders stationed above the gate.

The brick version keeps that layout. Two 6 x 6 stone towers flank a passage four studs wide, joined above the arch by a wall-walk. Embossed masonry bricks in light gray give the walls their texture over a dark gray plinth, and stacked black 1 x 1 bricks make the narrow arrow slits through which archers could shoot while staying under cover.

Most of the effort sits in the long middle stretch, steps 3 to 14, where you raise both towers course by course. It is steady, repetitive work, and the arrow slits are the easiest thing to misalign, so keep checking them against the course below. Step 8 is the busiest single step: the arch, the portcullis, the door frame and an open reddish-brown door all go in together.

The top is where the build gets its character. In step 15 each tower is capped with an 8 x 8 plate that overhangs on all sides, red banners with yellow hems hang from the edges, and step 16 lines the tops with crenellations, the alternating solid merlons and open gaps of a battlement.

All told it is 297 parts in 18 steps on a 24 x 14 stud base. Budget around 75 to 100 minutes.
