About this build

Every other course of this cabin's walls switches color. Reddish-brown log bricks, then dark brown, then reddish-brown again, six courses in all, so the walls read as individual timbers stacked one on top of the next rather than as a flat brown box. The log bricks themselves carry the rounded profile; the color swap does the rest.

The corners are handled differently from a real cabin. Instead of logs notched and crossed at each corner, four dark brown 1 x 1 x 5 posts stand at the corners in step 4 and the log courses fill in between them. In step 9 small round bricks cap the posts, and the result looks like squared corner timbers. Three windows with trans-yellow glass go into course 3, which gives the cabin its lit-from-inside look even in daylight.

Above the walls, the gable ends in step 11 are logs too, so the timber texture carries right up under the roof. The steep dark-red roof takes two full steps of 45-degree slopes, and the stone chimney on the west gable mixes light and dark gray bricks so it looks like fieldstone rather than a gray column.

Plan on roughly 50-75 minutes for the 209 parts and 19 steps. The cabin itself is 10 x 8 studs on a 24 x 20 stud meadow, with a porch out front and pines, a woodpile and a chopping stump around it.

If you want a weathered look, try running the log colors in a less regular order; the rocking chair and lantern stay the same.
