About this build

Turquoise and white stripes make this little building read as a beach hut rather than a garden shed. Here the stripes come from alternating tall 1 x 1 x 5 bricks in dark turquoise and white, a simple way to get vertical stripes without printed parts. Under a steep red gable roof, the hut stands on a deck with four round stilts, facing a strip of blue sea edged with white surf.

The build runs 12 steps and uses 106 parts on a base 16 studs wide and 11 deep. Budget about 40–60 minutes; the roof takes the longest.

Steps 1 to 3 are quick. Blue plates become sea, tan plates become sand, and white tiles and round tiles along the shoreline suggest waves breaking. The deck sits on four reddish-brown round bricks, so it floats one brick above the sand.

Walls go up in steps 4 to 6. Watch the color order: turquoise and white columns alternate, and a mistake shows straight away. The red door sits in a white frame on the front wall.

The roof, in steps 7 to 9, is a good introduction to stepped slopes. Each course of red 45-degree slopes sits slightly further in than the one below, while white bricks fill the gable ends between them. Double slopes close the ridge at the top.

Steps 10 to 12 add the beach clutter: a red-and-white umbrella on a stack of white round bricks, a striped towel made of yellow and white tiles, a deck chair, a tan sandcastle and a small surfboard.
