About this build

A gold pretzel hangs from a dark brown arm at the corner of this shop. In Germany the pretzel has long served as the bakers' emblem, so the sign tells passers-by what is sold inside. The building behind it is half-timbered, a style in which a frame of heavy timber posts, beams and braces carries the house and the spaces between them are filled in.

Here the timber is dark brown and the infill is white. The ground floor is tan sandstone with a dark band, big shop windows and a bread stand piled with loaves out front. The upper floor is jettied, meaning it projects past the wall below; you will see this in steps 7 and 8, where two inverted slopes act as corbels and a layer of timber plates reaches one stud beyond the shop front. That small overhang does a lot of work. It carries the red-and-white awning in step 9 and gives the facade the stepped-out profile of an old timber-framed street.

Above the jetty, steps 10 to 12 alternate dark brown posts with white bricks, add an X brace and set flower boxes under the windows. The roof is steep and dark red, built from 45-degree slopes over steps 15 to 17, with a small dormer on one side and a chimney.

The whole scene covers 18 x 16 studs of street, uses 266 parts and takes 19 steps; plan on roughly an hour to an hour and a half. The lamp, bench and flower pots in step 19 are easy to rearrange if you want to line the bakery up with other buildings.
