About this build

On a Dutch stage mill, the stellingmolen, a wooden gallery wraps around the tower partway up. Tall mills need it: the sails sweep too high to reach from the ground, so the miller works from the stage, setting the sail cloths and turning the cap to face the wind. In this model it is a 12 x 12 deck of reddish-brown plates with white railings, two studs wider than the brick base on every side.

Below the stage is a dark red brick base with a green door in a white frame. Above it, the body is dark gray, a nod to the thatch that covers many Dutch mills, and it narrows twice on its way up: from 8 studs wide to 6 in step 10, then to 4 in step 12, each time with a skirt of 45-degree slopes. A black cap rides on top, with a 2 x 10 plate running forward beneath it as the windshaft.

The sails take the most care. White lattice fences line each arm of a brown stock, and the left and right arms sit on opposite sides of the stock, so the four sails read as a pinwheel rather than a plain cross. Steps 16 to 18 assemble them one arm at a time.

The rest of the 32 x 32 baseplate is a tulip field in rows of red, yellow, pink and orange, bordered on two sides by an L-shaped blue canal; a small white bridge and a tan path lead to the door. With 283 parts in 18 steps, expect somewhere between one and two hours at the table. The tulip rows are simple stripes, so reordering the colors is an easy way to make the field your own.
