About this build

Raised beds are a common way to grow vegetables in a small yard: a low wooden frame filled with soil, sitting above the lawn. This scene has three of them on a 16 x 12 stud grass base, along with a scarecrow, a watering can, stepping stones and a white picket fence. It takes 107 parts and 11 steps, which works out to about 30–40 minutes.

Most of the planting is small round parts, a good lesson in how much a single stud can say.

  • Carrots (steps 4–5): orange 1 x 1 round plates sit on the dark soil, and a bright green five-petal plate on each one becomes the leafy top.
  • Cabbage and lettuce (step 6): a green inverted dish makes one round cabbage head, and a plant-leaf piece and green round plates fill out the rest of the bed. Two orange round bricks become tiny pumpkins.
  • Tomatoes (steps 7–9): tan round bricks are the bamboo stakes. Beside them, stacks of green and red 1 x 1 round bricks become vines hung with fruit.

The raised beds themselves teach basic framing. In step 2, medium-nougat 1 x 6 and 1 x 2 bricks surround a dark brown 2 x 4 brick, so the soil sits level with the frame and gives the vegetables studs to stand on.

The scarecrow in step 11 is the one figure in the scene. It is stacked from single bricks: a reddish-brown post, dark blue trousers, a dark red shirt, a red 1 x 6 brick for outstretched arms, tan round plates for straw hands, a tan head and a black hat on top.

Gray round tiles on the grass make the stepping-stone path, smooth because they are tiles rather than plates.
